Breaking Through: Community Colleges Receive $200,000 From the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to Scale Up Successes
Tacoma Community College is one of five community colleges sharing $200,000 to scale up 'Breaking Through,' a national initiative designed to support the educational and workforce advancement of underserved and under‐skilled young adult students by helping them prepare for and succeed in occupational and technical degree programs. With its grant, TCC will scale up its integration of I-BEST and Breaking Through practices.

Green-Collar People: Michael McCormick
He's gotten training in restoring historic buildings and completed an energy auditing class at Shoreline Community College. He hopes to become accredited to verify that "green" homes are being built to national standards.

Veterans seeking education benefits up
CBC also has seen an increase veterans. The college has about 300 students who served in the military. To help those students feel more welcome, the college formed the Columbia Basin College Veterans Alliance, a group of staff and students, said Peggy Buchmiller, CBC assistant dean for student services.

CWU talks budget strife during Legislative Day
.. The biggest "mystery" to the representatives from CWU was the state's favored interest in two-year degrees. Gaudino said the state was ranked fifth in the country in terms of citizen participation in A.A. degree programs, and only ranked 48th in bachelor degree participation. "The Legislature is putting money in for arming community college funding," Gaudino said. The only problem, Gaudino said, is many jobs ask for more than just a technical degree. "You are telling me we are going away from that college degree?" Hinkle said referring to the two-year degrees.
