Kitsap Chef Headed to White House to Help Combat Childhood Obesity
Olympic College culinary arts professor Chris Plemmons … is one of 100 chefs from around the country chosen for the Chefs Move to Schools program. The chefs, chosen for their interest in public education, will develop pilot programs to improve school nutrition in their hometowns. Plemmons was nominated for the program by the American Culinary Federation, of which he is a member, for his volunteer efforts toward better nutrition in Bremerton and Kitsap County.

Local students targeting global problems
As a pre-med student at Portland State University, Ben Hadlock got jazzed up when he first heard … about Global Medical Brigade. …When, for financial reasons, Hadlock returned to Lower Columbia College at the beginning of this year's winter quarter, he got a brigade started here, making a little history in the process. "There are 110 brigades worldwide, and LCC is the first community college to have one. All the others are four-year colleges or universities," Hadlock said. "It's not something a community college typically does, but when I spoke to the regional advisor, she said there's no reason why it can't work."

WWCC weather balloon launch goes off like rocket
This was the first time WWCC students have launched a weather balloon and the first time a weather balloon has been launched in Walla Walla County in a decade. The event involved 28 Walla Walla Community College students studying engineering physics and meteorology under instructor Frank Skorina.

Why more girls get the grades while boys struggle in our schools
Julio Palomino, 19, knows what it is like to struggle in high school. … He now attends Everett Community College, where he is doing well and hopes to earn his high school diploma and college associate's degree by next winter. Palomino said it helps him to take two to three classes a quarter at EvCC instead of six classes a semester in traditional high school. … Kyle Jorissen … said girls in general just seem to work harder than boys in the traditional classroom. … he is a solid student at Sno-Isle and is motivated enough in electronics to take a soldering and cabling night class at Edmonds Community College. Jorissen recently was chosen as the electronics program's student of the year.
