CBC’s ag programs honored
Columbia Basin College
in Pasco was selected as the 2010 Washington Outstanding Postsecondary/Adult Agricultural Education Program.  The award, given by the National Association of Agricultural Educators recognizes the nation’s most successful agricultural education programs by highlighting the local programs and teachers that achieve success. Kerrin Molton is the CBC program instructor.

Tacoma CC picked for $14 million math experiment

Tacoma Community College has been selected as one of 19 community colleges in five states to take part in a two-year, $14 million initiative to improve math literacy. Funded by five foundations, with The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as lead, the experiment will address the high percentage of new college students who are placed in remedial math who either do not successfully complete the sequence of required courses or avoid taking math altogether and therefore never complete their college programs.

Author Burke to sign copies of newest book in Richland
By the mid-1960s, Roger Burke was out of the military and returned to the Tri-Cities, where he enrolled at Columbia Basin College to take English classes. "I knew I wanted to write, but I struggled with English 101," he said. It was George Slanger, an English teacher, who gave Burke the boost he needed. "He listened and he encouraged," Burke said. … "We all need each other. It's like that kindly teacher at CBC. That's become my philosophy in life. If people want to do something bad enough, we need to encourage them," Burke said.

The UBB program grew quickly as local educators from the University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle University, Evergreen College, Shoreline Community College, and Seattle Public Schools began volunteering their time.
