State Budget Cuts To Hit Social Services And Community Colleges

Washington State officials announced 6 percent across–the–board budget cuts yesterday. We'll look at how those cuts will affect some of the state's most vulnerable citizens and how the cuts will make it tougher for community college students.  Michele Johnson, chancellor of the Pierce College District and president of the board of the Washington Association of Community and Technical Colleges.

Commerce secretary to meet small business owners in Everett
Gary Locke, the former governor of Washington who is now the nation's commerce secretary, will meet Monday in Everett with the owners of small and medium-sized manufacturing companies. Locke and Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., will host a roundtable discussion on what they can do to increase exports and help the businesses grow and create jobs. It will take place at noon at the welding lab of Everett Community College.

County training program featured in federal report

The U.S. Department of Energy has highlighted a Clark County training program as a federal stimulus success story. The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council received $1 million to train workers to perform home energy upgrades. Through a partnership with Clark College and Vancouver contractor Richart Family Inc., the students got on-the-job training and attended classes to receive Building Performance Institute Energy Analyst and BPI Shell certifications.

State's revenue forecast gets gloomier; LCC anticipates cuts
For Lower Columbia College, the revenue shortfall means the college must trim $810,000 for this school year, a 6 percent cut in state support that comes as LCC opens an academic year Monday with record enrollment, college President Jim McLaughlin said. "It's going to be continued cuts. There is no way that we're going to avoid them," McLaughlin said. "We will see some reduction in staffing and service: fewer classes, fewer choices for students."

Western Washington University to cut $3 million more as state revenue declines
Consolidating support services with other groups. An example of this is a new partnership between WWU and Whatcom Community College to combine print services. Doing this has reduced the number of WWU staff in this area from about 10.5 full-time employees to about 5.5.

Higher education locally taking a big hit
Yakima Valley Community College and Central Washington University officials knew for weeks that they were about to take a budget hit. On Thursday, they found out how big a hit it was. … "This is really significant," YVCC President Linda Kaminski said Thursday afternoon. "We've already taken $5 million (in cuts) over the past three years."
