Another $1.2B hole in state revenue projected — expect more budget cuts

Washington state's revenue picture has grown even more dire. The state's chief economist on Thursday forecast an additional $1.2 billion drop in tax collections between now and June 2013.

WSU prof: Oakesdale wind farm would benefit Whitman County

[Walla Walla Community College] also is training students to work in the field of wind energy. Instructor James Bradshaw spoke Wednesday about the college's wind energy technology program.  The college currently video conferences classes between WWCC and students at the Clarkston campus ... He's also hoping to reach out to high school students around Whitman County who are interested in a vocational-technical career.

Greenery students find perfect poinsettias demand precision

Every fall, Spokane Community College’s greenhouse management students raise poinsettias as part of their crop-management education. … According to instructor Brian Green, growing poinsettias is the ultimate test of their skills. This year’s challenges included an issue with some unanticipated light pollution. … The students not only grow poinsettias for the learning experience; their work helps choose new varieties that will be introduced nationally next year.

Journalism students employ new media, take home awards

The journalism program at Spokane Falls Community College has just received a 2010 Pacemaker award for its newspaper the Communicator’s online presence, reaping the rewards of fundamentally changing its journalism curriculum. “We decided we could compete against some of the bigger programs online, that we could do some things on our website while the Web was still pretty much the Wild West,” said Jason Nix, faculty adviser for SFCC’s Communicator.
