Movie buzz: "Welcome to Parkland"
Flaaen got his start in front of the camera over 30 years ago at Lee Strasberg's famed Theatre and Film Institute in L.A., under the tutelage of Elia Kazan's daughter. Now a SAG actor, he lives with his family in Parkland, dabbles in local theater and next year will receive one of the last video production degrees from Clover Park Technical College's dissolving program.

Architect’s Rendering Offers First Glimpse Of New Hotel Planned for Des Moines
Sheckler played a pivotal role in bringing the Artemis Hotel – once planned for Tacoma – to Des Moines during a trip to China in November 2009. While he went there to build foundations for a sister-city relationship with Changle, China, and an exchange program between Chinese community college students and Highline Community College, he came home with an agreement to build the multi-million-dollar hotel in Des Moines.

Columbia Basin College hopes to expand its agricultural outreach with a new line of food products. The Pasco, Wash., community college … debuted its Savory Brands lineup of products, including balsamic vinegar, virgin olive oil, dry salsa mix, wine mustard and a creamy cranberry walnut crunch.

Opportunity for higher education knocks
Higher education is alive and well in Snohomish County. Local institutions enjoy increased enrollment and program opportunities are keeping pace. A prime example is found at University Center of North Puget Sound on the Everett Community College campus. … Snohomish County is host to a large number of manufacturing firms, from aerospace to high tech. Perhaps because of this, there is a lot of interest in technical programs at Edmonds Community College.
