OUR VIEW | Offering a Degree of Change Through Olympic College

Beginning next January, online learning will replace traditional teacher/classroom instruction for Kitsap and Olympic peninsula students in the four-year WWU degree program. Online teaching will be supplemented with in-person seminars at Olympic College and at Peninsula Community College in Port Angeles. …  although WWU’s online program will mean the end of in-person instruction for students in Kitsap County, it will open a door for Port Angeles area students who couldn’t commute to Olympic College classrooms in Bremerton to earn their bachelor’s degree.  …  Yes, this is a radically non-traditional approach to higher education. But in a greater sense, it’s the continuation of a role community colleges have played for more than a half-century — offering educational opportunities to students who are unable to attend four-year universities in urban areas.

Higher education cuts coming home to roost
News that Clover Park Technical College will exact $1.3 million in cuts from personnel and programs this year is the latest fallout of the squeeze on community and technical colleges.

State lawmakers can’t pare $73 million from two-year colleges’ budgets without impairing the institutions’ ability to preserve existing programs, much less meet demand created by record unemployment.  At other South Sound colleges, the story is similar. Tacoma Community College and Pierce College each anticipate cutting more than $1 million from their budgets. The board of trustees at Bates Technical College recently declared a financial emergency and announced plans to lay off 19 staff and faculty members …. When budget writers go looking for nips and tucks, state colleges and universities are likely to get pinched. …  Higher education gets cut out of desperation, not sound economic policy.

Old Economy companies reward shareholders with highest returns in last decade

Of the 16 Northwest-based companies that averaged double-digit shareholder returns during the 2000s, seven were manufacturers, one was a utility and one was a wood-products company — all Old Economy mainstays. For recent generations, long road to adulthood

… More people in their 20s are also living with their parents. About one-fourth of 25-year-old white men lived at home in 2007 — before the latest recession — compared with one-fifth in 2000 and less than one-eighth in 1970. The sizable contribution from parents not only strains already stressed middle-class and poor families, researchers argue, but could also affect institutions that have traditionally supported young adults in this period, like nonresidential and community colleges and national service programs. "We have not developed and strengthened institutions to serve young adults," Furstenberg said, "because we're still living with the archaic idea that people enter adulthood in their late teens or early 20s

… He couldn't find a guidance counselor, and he felt lost. So he switched to the private University of Phoenix. There, everything fell into place -- at 17 times the cost.  Carrillo's move from the community college to the for-profit university shows the allure of a higher-education sector that is growing so fast the federal government wants to rein it in. … "What good is cheap tuition if classes are so packed you can't even get in?" he asked.
