[Lower Columbia College] ready to give new 'green' gowns a test run

The school colors are red and white, but Lower Columbia College is going green during its graduation ceremony tonight. The LCC faculty will be wearing caps and gowns woven with fabric made entirely of recycled plastic bottles.

Octopus "graduates" at local Des Moines aquarium

As an audience of local marine life and ebullient visitors looked on, Highline Community College graduated its first cephalopod. On June 5, the Highline Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center, a small public aquarium at Redondo Beach, invited the community to a celebration of George the giant pacific octopus' release into Puget Sound.

Transit agency set to approve blanket $5 bus pass for Peninsula College students

Peninsula College students have agreed to add a $5 fee to their tuition to reduce the pollution they generate driving to and from school, and Clallam Transit is expected to approve it Monday.

Recession puts Michigan's focus on adult ed reforms /State struggles to help its least educated adults

.. "They don't just need to go up a couple of grade levels in math or reading. They don't need to just get a GED," … What they need is job training, he said, even college, and so the state is pushing forward with a reform program meant to clear that path. .… Those numbers can be improved, as Washington has done with a program called I-BEST, which integrates basic skills instruction with technical classes, placing two teachers in each classroom.  But I-BEST is expensive, three times what Michigan pays per adult ed student. Replacing the "second chance literacy program based on the church basement model" with programs oriented toward continuing education and careers does make a difference, Jenkins said. Whether it will be enough without more investment is an open question.

Midwest employers eyeing BBCC program

Midwestern employees are calling Big Bend Community College to enroll their employees in a new center pivot training program -- the Mechanized Irrigation System Technology (MIST) Program -- starting this fall. “There are no other programs like this, and there is a need throughout the western states,” said Doug Sly, executive director of the college foundation, on Wednesday. “Word is already getting out, probably because the manufacturers are based in the Midwest.”
